La new wave è un genere musicale popolare a partire dalla fine degli anni 70 e per tutti gli anni 80, non caratterizzato da un vero sound specifico, ma differenziato dal mainstream del periodo e legato in qualche modo al punk rock.
Nella “new wave” furono inclusi vari sottogeneri musicali del periodo, inclusi power pop, synth-pop, ska revival e il post punk meno “abrasivo”. Caratteristiche comuni alla musica new wave sono un particolare approccio pop, l’uso di suoni eletttronici e un caratteristico stile visivo nei video musicali e nel modo di vestire. Il giornalista musicale Charles Shaar Murray, scrivendo a proposito dei Boomtown Rats, ha indicato come il termine new wave fosse un termine dell’industria discografica utilizzato per definire qualunque musicista avesse influenze punk, senza però fare musica punk.
