Il rock progressivo, in inglese progressive rock, spesso abbreviato in prog o prog rock, è un genere della musica rock, evolutosi dal rock psichedelico di fine anni sessanta e diffusosi in tutto il mondo con grandissimo successo nel decennio successivo. Il nome del genere vuole indicare la progressione del rock verso un livello maggiore di complessità e varietà compositiva, melodica, armonica e stilistica.
Il progressive rock utilizza strumentazioni e tecniche compositive frequentemente associate alla musica classica e al jazz, I brani possono essere costituiti da lunghe suite musicali e possono arrivare a durare quanto l’intera facciata di un disco LP, anche oltre i 20 minuti, con influenze sinfoniche, temi musicali estesi, ambientazioni e testi fantasy e complesse orchestrazioni. Nella prima metà degli anni settanta grazie a grandi gruppi quali Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Camel, Jethro Tull e molti altri il prog rock raggiunse il massimo successo artistico e commerciale. Ma che gusti e cultura musicali avete? Ma vi pare che Procol Harum siano definibili progressive, quando trattasi di band beat e after beat, bravissima peraltro. E i Supertramp non sono altro che valido pop americano anni 70 e 80, per non dire che la componente hard e early metal è prevalente nei Rush e nei Kansas
