Il southern rock è un sottogenere della musica rock sviluppatosi nella parte meridionale degli Stati Uniti come miscela di rock, country e blues e caratterizzato dal notevole utilizzo di chitarre elettriche. Le origini del southern rock sono collocate nei tardi anni 60 quando band come Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band scalarono le classifiche con la loro musica fortemente influenzata dal blues, dal boogie e dalla musica country. Nel decennio successivo grazie a gruppi come The Allman Brothers Band e Lynyrd Skynyrd il souther rock raggiunse l’apice del suo successo e nei decenni successivi ha continuato ad influenzare il suono di molte nuove band.
